Validation is a pretty cool webcomic written by Christian Beranek/ christianberanek and drawn by Kelci Crawford! It updates twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.
Allie’s a young woman who loves dinosaurs, comic books, and hanging out with her friends. When she meets up with online friend Roxie, it becomes a pretty great catalyst towards getting more involved with the world, up to and including meeting a possible new love interest in Jim. It’s always nice to expand your social circle with people who respect you and your views, especially when you’re transgender.
It can be tough for girls like Allie to navigate through society even with a strong support network. Probing personal questions, insults, anxiety about using the “correct” bathroom, jokes in media, even slip-ups from your friends… they’re all things that one has to deal with on a regular basis, and can often feel like too much to take. But it does make those small moments of recognition, acceptance, and validation feel all the more like victories, and with any luck Allie will find that the good moments will outweigh the bad. Or at the very least, are strong enough that they can support her through the hard times.
Validation is a very sweet slice-of-life comic dealing with Allie, her friends, and experiences in her day-to-day life. The writing doesn’t shy away from matters of discrimination and transphobia, but it doesn’t dwell on them either, and it’s always nice to see trans characters who are A) written as actual people and B) allowed to have a generally pretty good life. Even with all the horrible things and people that are still around, it’s always important to find comfort and validation in the little things. After all, sometimes it’s all that can keep you going, and that’s true for pretty much everyone no matter your gender identity.
Ultimately, Validation is a happy comic, with some nice themes and the reminder that not everyone is a bigoted asshole. Read it to lengthen a good mood or pick yourself out from a bad one, and remember that your thoughts, feelings, and identity are… well, valid.
Validation contains sexual references and occasional slurs (depicted as being negative, but still), and is otherwise suitable for anyone who needs to read it.
Pretty cool review :-)
